Description
- Enteric aerobic culture is used to isolate and identify aerobic bacterial pathogens involved in gastrointestinal illness in animals. Organisms routinely assessed include Salmonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, and pathogenic Escherichia coli. Target pathogens may vary based on the animal’s species, age, and clinical history.
Specimens Required
- Fresh feces (1-2 grams)
- Intestinal tissue
Important: Swabs are not an appropriate specimen type for this test and will not yield reliable results.

Special Instructions
For companion animal submissions the lab typically performs a Campylobacter culture in conjunction with the enteric aerobic culture unless otherwise requested.
If submitting for multiple tests, for example parasitology testing, it is recommended to submit 5-10 grams of feces.
