Description
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is a valuable diagnostic tool for determining effective treatment for bacterial infections. WADDL offers minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) panels which include antimicrobials appropriate for food animal, canine, feline, equine, and avian species.

AST is performed per Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines and reviewed by a board‑certified veterinary bacteriologist to ensure:

  • Appropriate selection and exclusion of antimicrobials based on the bacterial species identified, site of infection, and animal species
  • Recognition and reporting of antimicrobials based on intrinsic resistance
  • Tiered reporting of antimicrobials based on stewardship principles, including avoidance of unnecessarily broad‑spectrum or critically important antimicrobials when effective alternatives exist

Certain antimicrobial agents may not be reported despite in vitro testing if they are considered clinically inappropriate due to intrinsic resistance, lack of efficacy, toxicity concerns, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) or stewardship considerations.

Our AST service is designed to support evidence‑based treatment decisions while promoting responsible antimicrobial use in veterinary medicine. By combining standardized testing with expert review, we aim to help clinicians select the most appropriate therapy while minimizing the development of antimicrobial resistance.

Our subject matter experts are available to consult if you have questions regarding result interpretation or antimicrobial selection.
