Description
The DEPOHGEN® test is a pharmacogenomic screening tool developed by Dr. Michael Court, a veterinary pharmacologist and geneticist at Washington State University. Dr. Court’s research explores how genetic differences influence drug responses in animals, with a focus on improving safety and treatment outcomes. This test detects a specific genetic variant linked to Delayed Post-Operative Hemorrhage (DEPOH) in dogs. Using a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)-based assay, the test amplifies and analyzes DNA from a cheek swab or blood sample to determine the presence or absence of the risk-associated variant.
Specimens Required
Two specimen types are accepted:

1. DNA Collection Brush (cheek swab) OR
2. Whole Blood (EDTA tube)

Both types of specimens provide sufficient DNA for analysis; choose the one most convenient for you or your client.
Sampling Requirements
DNA Collection Brush
Provided in the DEPOHGEN® sampling kit
  • Use both brushes from the kit to swab the inside of the dog’s cheek.
  • Allow brushes to dry (30 minutes), then insert into the labeled swab sleeve.
Whole Blood (EDTA Tube)
Collected at a veterinary clinic (no DEPOHGEN® sampling kit required)
  • Collect a minimum of 2 mL of whole blood.
  • Mix gently by inverting the tube several times immediately after collection.

For additional information on how to collect and submit a sample please visit our Submit a Sample page.
Collection Container
DNA Collection Brush: Use the provided swab sleeve from the DEPOHGEN® sampling kit.
Whole Blood: Use a purple top (EDTA) tube.

Packing Instructions
DNA Collection Brushes
Place the labeled swab pouch and completed submission form in a padded envelope or reuse the original cardboard mailer.
  • Avoid bending or damaging the brushes.
Whole Blood Samples
Normally, no cooling is necessary. Place the labeled blood tube in a small zip-closure bag, wrap in bubble wrap, and place it in a padded or bubble mailer with the submission form.
  • In very hot weather: Use a small box with one frozen gel pack. Place the sample in a zip-closure bag, wrap in bubble wrap, and include the submission form in a separate plastic bag.
Visit Shipping | Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory | Washington State University for further shipping instructions.  Ensure the specimen is sent to the Pullman Laboratory.

Special Instructions
A test sampling kit (includes two brushes, a pouch, and a return mailer) is available at no extra charge when you order the DEPOHGEN test.

Alternatively, brushes may be purchased: medical cytology brushes (recommended) or interdental brushes. “Sponge” type DNA collectors are not recommended.

If you use interdental brushes without a sleeve, once the brushes are dry you should put them into a small envelope or resealable plastic bag and write the name of the pet on the outside. Use separate envelopes/bags for each pet to avoid cross-contamination.

Labeling Instructions:
  • DNA Collection Brush: Label the paper backing of the swab sleeve with the dog’s name, the owner’s first and last name (or veterinary clinic), and the dog’s breed using a pen or permanent marker.
  • Blood Sample: Label the tube with the dog’s name and the owner’s first and last name.
  • Important: Ensure that the name on the sample matches exactly with the name on the submission form. Unclear or mismatched labeling will prevent testing.
Note:  There is an addition $10.00 charge for international orders.
