Description
Detection of Echinococcus by PCR, with speciation by Sanger sequencing.
Specimens Required
- Fresh, frozen, or formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues, based on gross lesions or immunohistochemical results
- Cyst fluid, based on gross lesions or immunohistochemical results*
*Caution is advised when sampling suspected cystic liver lesions, as rupture of hydatid cysts may pose an anaphylactic risk. When possible, complete surgical resection (e.g., liver lobectomy) with histopathology is preferred over fine needle aspirates or biopsies.

Feces is not an acceptable sample for this test.
We attempt nested PCR for negative samples in order to improve sensitivity, and we charge a lower fee for nested PCR for samples which yield negative direct PCR results, or for samples which yield poor sequence data. As of February 2023, that fee is $75.
