Testing is performed at University of Idaho's Analytical Science Lab (ASL).
Description
Quantification of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc within a blood sample. 

Sample should be spun and the serum separated from the clot within 30 minutes of collection, prior to shipping. Lysis of RBCs may artificially increase iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc levels.
Specimens Required
Preferred Sample:
  • Serum (1-3 mL; minimum of 200 ul for our avian/small exotic patients only.)
Other acceptable Sample:
  • Plasma (1-3 mL; minimum of 200 ul for our avian/small exotic patients only)
Note: Small volume samples may affect reporting limits. Additional fees may apply. 
Sampling Requirements
Separate serum from clot before shipping and avoid contact with any rubber stoppers during collection and shipping. Plasma should also be separated from RBCs prior to shipping. Send samples chilled or frozen with an ice pack.

  1. Serum- acceptable tube types
    • Royal Blue Trace Element Tube (without additives)
    • Plastic Top - Serum Separator Tube (without additives)
    • Plastic Top - Red Top Tube (without additives)
  2. Plasma- Spun using one of the following acceptable tubes before being poured into any sterile tube for transport. 
    • Blue Top Tube (with K2EDTA additive)
    • Lavender Top Tube (with EDTA additive)
    • Green Top Tube (with heparin additive)
Packing Instructions
Label sample container/tube with corresponding name identifier.
