Description
Detection of rabies virus by real-time PCR.
For whole cadavers or heads submitted for Rabies testing, a sample processing fee of $50 is charged for brain removal.
Turnaround Time Information:
Results for Rabies PCR will be available at the earliest 2 business days after the brain or carcass arrives at WADDL. For example, if the brain arrives at WADDL on Tuesday, the earliest that Rabies PCR results will be available is Thursday.

Specimens Required
- Whole carcass
- Whole brain
- Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) brain tissue, preferably:
- Whole cross section of brainstem at the level of the middle cerebellar peduncle
Sampling Requirements
Discussion with DOH required before WADDL performs this test. Please call lab before submitting samples.

Collection Container
Carcass or tissues: sealed, leak-proof plastic bag or container.
Packing Instructions
Label all samples. Store refrigerated. Ship overnight on cold packs in an insulated container.
