Special Instructions
WADDL also offers culture for Mycobacterium species, and this is recommended for cases where there is a granulomatous lesion with no acid fast bacteria or few acid fast bacteria seen on a smear or histopathology stain. WADDL can sometimes identify Mycobacterium species when few or no organisms are seen on the stain, but the chances are less than 20% for these cases.
Cultures to rule out M. tuberculosis or requests for specific PCR for the M. tuberculosis group should be sent to NVSL rather than WADDL.
We attempt nested PCR for negative samples in order to improve sensitivity, and we charge a lower fee for nested PCR for samples which yield negative direct PCR results, or for samples which yield poor sequence data. As of February 2023, that fee is $75.
