Description
Choanal and cloacal sample sites of avian origin on Dacron plastic shafted swabs in appropriate transport media (BHI or VTM). Fresh tissues on ice packs may also be tested. Tracheal/oropharyngeal swabs a from up to 5 birds from one premise can be pooled together in 3-3.5 ml BHI broth for testing. Tracheal swabs may not be pooled with cloacal swabs. Fresh tissues from multiple birds may not be pooled.
This PCR involves a screening assay which detects APMV-1 (avian paramyxovirus). Samples which test positive on the screen are sent to NVSL for confirmation, and also tested at WADDL for virulent Newcastle disease (vNDV) by a second PCR assay. (The screening assay also detects pigeon paramyxovirus and other related viruses.)
