Special Instructions
Blood cultures include a Gram stain, aerobic and anaerobic blood culture.

WADDL now has an automated blood culture system, BD BACTEC FX40, that allows for faster cultivation and detection of positive blood cultures. For use of the automated blood culture system, BD BACTEC aerobic and anaerobic culture vials will need to be submitted. 

For fungal culture requests, in addition to the blood culture, will include a mycology culture. If a fungal infection is suspected, it is strongly recommended that the specimen be submitted in an isolator blood culture tube such as a Wampole ISOSTAT system.

It is recommended to include two collections from separate anatomic sites. Collection of multiple samples from separate sites helps differentiate true pathogens, which will be present in more than one blood culture, from skin flora contaminates that may associated with sample collection.

Joint and CSF fluid submitted in blood culture bottles will be charged for a blood culture.

Do not refrigerate blood culture bottles after inoculation.
