        Description
    
    Pacheco's disease is a common, often fatal, disease of parrots. Molecular detection of Pacheco’s disease by PCR is highly sensitive and specific for this virus.
    
        Specimens Required
    
    In live birds please submit both a blood sample and cloaca sample for each bird. 
From deceased birds submit blood or liver.
Environmental testing using swabs of aviaries, countertops, fans, air-filters, nest-boxes, etc. is extremely effective when in determining the presence of Pacheco's virus DNA in the environment.

        Sampling Requirements
    
    Use synthetic or semi-synthetic swabs (e.g., polyester, rayon, nylon) with a plastic handle (flocked or spun head).
